The wing rail !
There are two wing rail in total, located symmetrically on the left and right wings of the point rail. Wing rails and the point rail form a frog.
What is the role of wing rails ?
The function of wing rails is to ensure that the locomotive wheels safely pass through the intersection part. The function of the wing rail is twofold.
Besides guiding the wheel flange into the frog flange groove, it also supports the wheel when the wheel transitions through the "harmful space" to the point where the point rail fully supports the wheel.
The wing rail is subjected to greater impact force from the wheels compared to other rail components, often occurring in the front and rear positions of the harmful spaces. Impact cracks, rail surface abrasions, or severe falling blocks can cause serious injuries to the turnout, therefore, it is necessary to strengthen the non-destructive testing.
