railway track thermal expansion

Summer is coming , have you heard the railway track thermal expansion !
Rail tracks expand when exposed to high temperatures due to the fundamental physical property of metals. The expansion coefficient of steel is approximately 11.7 × 10⁻⁶/°C, meaning that for every 1°C increase in temperature, a 100m steel rail will expand by about 1.17mm.
In seamless tracks, the absence of expansion joints means this thermal expansion creates significant compressive stresses within the rail. When these stresses exceed the lateral resistance capacity of the ballast and fastening systems, track buckling or "sun kink" occurs, posing serious safety risks.
so is there any preventive solutions ?
Enhanced ballast maintenance, compact ballast with proper shoulder width to increase lateral resistance. Regularly supplement ballast in weak sections.
Accurate Rail Temperature Monitoring
Stress Adjustment, conduct planned stress relief operations within the design rail temperature range, especially after maintenance activities.
Alignment Correction, correct alignment deviations before summer, using more tamping and less lining to maintain stability.

Emergency Protocols, For buckling incidents: cool rails with water for 20-30 minutes; if unresolved, realign track to minimum 200m radius curve with 10m straight transition zones.
